Göteborg Film Festival presented its anticipated 10th Nostradamus Report titled ”Everything Changing All at Once” at the Marché du Film during Festival de Cannes. The annual report analyzes and forecasts the near future of the faster-than-ever evolving audiovisual industries through research and interviews with industry experts.

What new possibilities and threats will be unlocked with AI-powered technologies integrating into audiovisual industry workflows? How can the industry take action to transform itself to appeal to Gen Z, ensuring a diverse talent pipeline for creativity as well as capacity? How can the filmmaking business adapt to the changing landscape, embracing various formats, business models, and distribution paths?

“With production technologies changing and democratizing, filmmaking is about to become incredibly exciting again. At the same time film and TV production volumes will contract for a few years, so it’s especially important not to make short-sighted choices. To remain relevant and attractive for audiences and talent, we can’t afford to now sacrifice workforce diversity, a healthy work environment, or investment in content for younger audiences.“

For the next 3-5 years, the 2023 Nostradamus report predicts a pronounced restructuring phase for the traditional film and television industries. AI-powered technologies are set to bring dramatic efficiency gains and creative possibilities, but also major challenges, such as heavily restructuring jobs and workflows in all parts of the industry. With the impact of transformed global economies, conflicts, and climate crises, the industry’s future context will be far from business as usual.

The report also delves into the evolving nature of TV as a streaming platform and examines the industry’s challenges in remaining attractive to young audiences. It concludes that the film & TV industry must focus on audience relevance; that it will develop and distribute its content in a way that is IP-centric and platform-harmonic; and that it urgently needs to address its issues with social and environmental sustainability.

    This year’s interviewees include:
Sened Dhab, VP Young Adult Drama, France Télévisions
    Rikke Ennis, CEO, REinvent Studios
Max Malka, Head of Scripted, EndemolShine Finland
Neil Peplow, Director, London Film School
Alex Pumfrey, CEO, Film and TV Charity
Sten-Kristian Saluveer, Founder & CEO at Storytek Innovation & Venture Studio
Danna Stern, Managing Director, In Transit Production
Will Richmond, Editor and Publisher, VideoNuze

The 2023 Nostradamus Report was presented at Marché du Film’s impACT x Cannes Next programme on May 22 by media analyst and author Johanna Koljonen. The presentation was followed by a panel consisting of: Rikke Ennis, CEO, REinvent Studios; Neil Peplow, Director, London Film School; Sten-Kristian Saluveer, Founder & CEO at Storytek Innovation & Venture Studio.

  2. 2022 Nostradamus Report – Imagining a Sustainable Industry

Kommentarer inaktiverade för 2022 Nostradamus Report – Imagining a Sustainable Industry

Göteborg Film Festival’s 9th Nostradamus Report, ”Imagining a Sustainable Industry”, was presented May 23 at the Marché du Film in Cannes. The annual report looks into the near future of the audiovisual industries through research and interviews with industry experts.

How can we build a long-term sustainable industry, taking into consideration financial, social as well as environmental perspectives? How do we create qualitative content that is relevant for broad audiences while also guaranteeing durable artistic and independent structures? What would it take to get there?

This year’s Nostradamus Report paints a picture of the current industry landscape and its challenges, outlining a set of directions on where we could be heading, as an industry but also as a society.

In the 2022 report we have a particular spotlight on Europe. As the global streaming giants are settling their positions, the unprecedented growth in production and capital has strongly challenged the European models across the board. The future role of public audiovisual investments and the independence of the European sector is under development, while also facing an increased volatility in the global economy and a geopolitical crisis in Europe.

The report also highlights the urgent issue of industry health, and discusses how transforming working conditions across the industry should offer financial, artistic, and efficiency benefits directly.

”Our track record has always been surprisingly good, but in this ninth year of the report, the uncertain political and economic situations have finally made firm predictions impossible. Instead the report identifies tensions and pivot points where the outcomes will be determined in the next few years through choices made by stakeholders all across the value chain. We all have an opportunity now to truly affect which future we want for the industry”, says Johanna Koljonen, author of the Nostradamus Report.

The 2022 Nostradamus Report is built around interviews with the following experts:

Bero Beyer, CEO of the Netherlands Film Fund.
Christian Bräuer, Managing Director Yorck Kino Gruppe, and President of CICAE, the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas.
Michael Gubbins, Consultant and journalist, SampoMedia Johannes Jensen, Head of Scripted, Banijay Nordic.
Julie-Jeanne Régnault, Secretary-General of European Film Agency Directors Association (EFAD).
Evan Shapiro, Producer, Media Studies professor at NYU and Fordham U, and unofficial cartographer of the Media Universe. Josefine Tengblad, Founder and producer, Nordic Drama Queens. Kjartan Þór Þórðarson, CEO and executive producer, Sagafilm Nordic.

Göteborg Film Festival’s 8th Nostradamus Report – ”Transforming Storytelling Together” – was presented today at the festival’s annual Nostradamus seminar. The annual report looks into the future of the screen industries 3-5 years from now through research and interviews with industry experts. The 2021 report expects the industry to go through an extensive reality check moving from streaming to reality warfare, and from pandemic to green issues.

We’re used to one year’s progress being subtle and mild. This year’s rude pandemic awakening has accelerated the structural changes already underway. Johanna Koljonen’s Nostradamus Report 2021 takes a look at the impact five years ahead in terms of collapsing windows and the transformation into a content releasing landscape, shaped in a common effort among virtually every stakeholder in the industry.

In a future perspective, theatrical exhibition will be diminished as a market, but revitalised as a dynamic and influential part of film culture. Five years from now, virtual production will have normalised across the industry, unlocking opportunities and artistic innovation. Other main topics in the report include strong European stories crossing language barriers, and how to keep delivering to the aging traditional audience while appealing to the TikTok generation of viewers and talent.

A special section looks at the European industry in the context of this year’s implementation of the AVMS directive.

”Growth in the TV marketplace will compensate for the challenges in feature distribution. But it’s important not to get complacent! When the whole landscape is shifting at the same time, anyone who isn’t actively innovating may find themselves sidelined.” says Johanna Koljonen, author of the Nostradamus Report.

This year’s interview subjects were: Alex Stolz/ Founder, Future of Film, and Head of Film, usheru Founder and Head of Film at Future of Film, Ari Tolppanen/ Investor and Chairman at Aristo-Invest, Brian Newman/ Producer, Consultant, Founder at Sub-Genre, Elisa Alvares/ Corporate Finance Consultant, Jacaranda Consultants, Filippa Wallestam/ EVP and Chief Content Officer at NENT Group, Mariana Acuña Acosta/ CPO & Co-founder at Glassbox Technologies, Marike Muselaers/ Co-CEO at Lumiere Group, Roberto Olla/ Executive Director at Eurimages, Walter Iuzzolino/ CEO at Eagle Eye Drama.

In addition, a special update on the progress of the implementation of the AVMS directive has been written (from the report) by Petri Kemppinen, founder P1 Kemppinen.

The 8th Nostradamus report was presented by Johanna Koljonen at the 2021 online edition of Göteborg Film Festival’s Nordic Film Market. The presentation was followed by a conversation with Tomas Eskilsson, Head of Strategy at Film i Väst on their upcoming European report on public financing, Public Funding at a Crossroads. The report is a research project from Film i Väst in collaboration with Cine-Regio and Nostradamus.

  4. 2020 Nostradamus report

Nostradamus Report: A Creative Explosion can be downloaded here

The report holds forth a near future where high quality, creativity and scripted content is king. A new wave of artistically outstanding feature filmmakers will offer opportunities for arthouse cinema to connect with younger audiences. Demand for gender and cultural diversification will continue, and the industry will next need to address the more complex pipeline problems affecting diverse recruitment.

Other themes discussed in the report are the consequences of the escalating streaming wars, alternative release patterns taking shape, and how the capacity issues caused by extreme demand on scripted content threaten quality. Streamers are also putting pressure on the traditional role of the producer, which may challenge cultural diversity down the line, especially as consolidations continue. Access to data analysis will be of increasing importance across roles in the industry.

Finally, the report discusses how emerging technologies – VR, deep fakes, game engines, etc – is causing fundamental changes in how audiovisual storytelling is produced and understood, with inevitable ripple effects on how audiences perceive the formats and platforms of film and TV as well.

The annual report is written by media analyst Johanna Koljonen.

  5. 2019 Nostradamus report

The 2019 Nostradamus report, ”Relevance in a New Reality”, discusses the uncertain future of public funding, major movements on the streaming market, the role of cinema in the new value chain, potential paths forward for VR, and the need for a rebooted industry conversation around tech and shared challenges.

Read the Nostradamus report 2019 here

Johanna Koljonen, author of the report, said:
”We’ve talked about ’structural change’ for a while now. In the next three to five years, a sector where we will see what the new structures look like in practice is the streaming market. It will be dominated by a handful of tech companies and consolidated majors and how this affects smaller languages and local players is not certain. The big players keeping their content exclusive to themselves might create new opportunities for others. But the question everyone will have to find answers to is how do you compete when there is always competition that can outrun you, outspend you, and produces content of a very high quality? Only with relevance.”

”Unprompted, all of the interviewees in this year’s report raised questions of meaning, values, purpose or sustainability. We’re moving towards a time

when public funding is more important than ever, but also likely to decrease. The European industry will need to find ways to prioritise, and get better at communicating to lawmakers and citizens why what we do is vital.” says Johanna Koljonen, author of the Nostradamus Report.

This year’s interview subjects were: Efe Cakarel/ Founder and CEO MUBI, Thomas Gammeltoft/ CEO Copenhagen Film Fund, Ani Korpela/

Director and Head of Content and Application Business Elisa, Ben Luxford/ Head of Audience BFI, Glenn O’Farrell/ CEO GroupeMédia TFO, Liz Rosenthal/ Programmer Venice VR and Founder of Power to the Pixel, Sten Saluveer/ Founder and CEO Storytek, Åsa Sjöberg/ Director of Content Bonnier Broadcasting, Maria Tanjala/ Co-Founder Big Couch and Film Chain

  6. 2018 Nostradamus Report

Kommentarer inaktiverade för 2018 Nostradamus Report

During Göteborg Film Festival 2018 the 5th Nostradamus Report – titled Do or Die? – was presented. It takes on the topics of whether the film industry as we know it will survive, and what European film makers, financiers and exhibitors need to do to compete with the global majors and remain a cultural force.

The Nostradamus Project is run by Göteborg Film Festival and aims to sketch out the future of the screen industries 3-5 years from now, through interviews with industry experts and research. The annual report is written by Johanna Koljonen.

Interviewed in this year’s report are: Nadira Azermai, CEO, ScriptBook; Walter Iuzzolino, Co-founder, Walter PresentsIvar Køhn, Head of Drama, NRK; Claus Ladegaard, CEO, Danish Film Institute; Marike Muselaers, Co-CEO, Lumière Group; Marie Nilsson, CEO, Mediavision; Edith Sepp, CEO, Estonian Film Institute and Patrick von Sychowski, editor, Celluloid Junkie.

Johanna Koljonen, writer of the Nostradamus Report, said:
    – This year’s title reflects this thrilling moment of risk and opportunity faced by the film industry in particular. Cinemas are doing well, but their cultural role is shifting, and a majority of films are consumed in the home as they have been for decades. But now those later windows are all changing, technologically and more importantly in audience behavior. Monetising audience attention in the value chain, reaching especially the younger audiences who don’t respond to advertising, and remaining relevant in the content all requires shifts in attitudes and business models. That has to happen now, and especially European filmmaking with its slow-moving structures really needs to become proactive to stay connected to the audiences.

    – We also take a follow-up look on gender equality in front of and behind the cinema as well as in executive positions in the industry. This connects to the more structural issues in that very homogenous leadership is less likely to have a broad understanding of changes out in the world.
