The American writer and climate expert Roy Scranton will attend Göteborg Film Festival in January. Scranton will give a Master Class that will be the start of the festival’s Focus: Apocalypse.

In light of the climate crisis, the apocalypse is the main focus of Göteborg Film Festival 2019. During the festival we will explore how today’s filmmakers visualise the future in the context of the crisis. What problems interest them? How is the anxiety portrayed and the emotional, philosophical and political dilemmas that the contemporary human face, when a highly potential end approaches? The theme is then explored during one day of exciting apocalypse seminars.

One who has studied these questions in detail is the award-winning writer, journalist and war veteran Roy Scranton who will open Focus: Apocalypse with a talk with Klimatpodden’s Ragnhild Larsson at Stadsbiblioteket the 26th of January. The day after, he will give a Master Class at Festivalarenan.

– With his radical sense of clarity, Roy Scranton has distinguished himself as one of the intellectuals who has had the greatest influence on how we think of the climate crisis in apocalyptic terms. It feels both fun and important to let the audience meet his challenging and refreshing world of thought, says Jonas Holmberg, Artistic Director, Göteborg Film Festival.
Roy Scranton is convinced that global warming will change the entire ecosystem to the extent that humanity is completely beyond rescue. His message is simple: We must begin to prepare ourselves that our civilisation will go under.

Roy Scranton is widely awarded and in 2013 published the book Learning to Die in the Anthropocene: Reflections on the End of Civilization, which received enormous attention. He has also written the collection of essays We’re Doomed. Now What? – Essays on War and Climate Change. Roy Scranton has been published in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Nation, Dissent, LIT, Los Angeles Review of Books and Boston Review and works at the Univeristy of Notre Dame.

Roy Scranton’s visit and performance is done in collaboration with Svenska kyrkan, similar to the rest of the seminars that is included in Focus: Apocalypse.
