Focus Forever Young: Once Upon a Time in Harlem

Legendary Harlem Renaissance figures deliver eternally-young perspectives at a cocktail party in Duke Ellington’s townhouse, 50 years after the movement’s heyday.

When documentary master William Greaves passed away just over a decade ago, he left behind a rough diamond: a collection of 16mm film reels shot in 1972, when he brought together an extraordinary group of members of the African American Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s. His son David Greaves, who was behind the camera at the time, has now completed the project, creating one of the year’s most inspiring and vibrant documentaries. Art, music, literature, politics and good old-fashioned gossip are discussed with wit and curiosity in a poetic tribute to art and knowledge that transcend generations.
