Focus Forever Young: The Revolution Against Death

Joshua Oppenheimer examines the dream of eternal life in a filmic poem about mortality, fear, longing and existential dread.

Beneath the blazing Californian sun, we meet people determined to defy ageing and death, pinning their hopes on technology to bring them back to life one day. At fairs where immortality is promoted as an opportunity for everyone, Joshua Oppenheimer probes our fear of death with a blend of dark humour and melancholy. Pill-popping retirees and packed conference halls are interspersed with poetic close-ups of plankton – the source of life – in a 24-minute meditation on humanity’s longing to transcend one of life’s most fundamental truths.
