Pia Lundberg Appointed Artistic Director of Göteborg Film Festival
Pia Lundberg has been named the new Artistic Director of Göteborg Film Festival. Lundberg, who most recently served as Cultural Counsellor at the Swedish Embassy in London, will assume her new role on March 1, 2024.
“It feels amazing to become part of the Nordic region’s largest film festival, and I’m so grateful for the trust placed in me. I’ve attended hundreds of film festivals and now finally have the chance to help create one myself. Sometimes, I wish doctors could prescribe great cinematic experiences. At a time when more and more decision-makers view art as merely a functional tool, it’s more important than ever to highlight film as an artistic and independent form of expression,” says Pia Lundberg.
“The board of Göteborg Film Festival is very pleased to announce Pia Lundberg as the new Artistic Director after an extensive recruitment process with many highly qualified candidates. Pia Lundberg has extensive and diverse experience in the film industry, having held various roles and developed a vast network that will contribute to strengthening the festival,” says Carina Lindberg Glavå, Chair of the Board, Göteborg Film Festival.
“I’m thrilled that the board has been able to bring Pia back to the film field after several years as Cultural Counsellor in London. Few people in Sweden have such vast experience with international film festivals combined with a deep connection to the Nordic film world. I look forward to working with Pia to continue developing Göteborg Film Festival as the cultural hub of Nordic cinema,” says Mirja Wester, CEO, Göteborg Film Festival.
From 2007 to 2018, Pia Lundberg was Head of International Affairs at the Swedish Film Institute, where she worked to promote Swedish film globally and strengthen international collaborations for the Swedish film industry. For seven years, she chaired the committee that selects Sweden’s submissions for the Academy Awards.
Over the past five years, Lundberg has been based in London as Cultural Counsellor at the Swedish Embassy.
Pia Lundberg is a trained journalist who began her career as a writer and editor for several Swedish and international film and culture publications, including Variety and Screen. Around the turn of the millennium, she served as editor-in-chief of the film magazine Cinema for four years.
