The Nostradamus Project monitors, predicts, and analyses the near future of the audiovisual industries. The Nostradamus Project is founded and run by Göteborg Film Festival with partners BoostHBG and Kulturakademin, and additional support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond and the Region Västra Götaland.
Since 2013, the Göteborg Film Festival’s Nostradamus initiative has provided in-depth insights and projections on the future of the evolving audiovisual sector. The annual reports, written by media analyst Johanna Koljonen, offer valuable foresight for professionals, policymakers, and public agencies across Europe.
Over the past decade, the Nostradamus reports have documented the digital transformation of the film and television sectors, noting trends in new business models, distribution strategies, and audience behaviors; production volume increasing to record levels, and peaking—and the industry weathering a global pandemic (that the reports admittedly did not predict).
The Nostradamus initiative’s mission is to document and provide foresight into the near future of the industry, and to present the insights in a manner that is equally comprehensible to producers, policymakers, stars, and students. This is achieved through interviews with change-makers and people in strategic positions in the industry, and strategic analysis, supported by comprehensive research and a journalistic approach.
Under the Nostradamus umbrella, we host international seminars and sessions at Nordic Film Market and TV Drama Vision during Göteborg Film Festival, as well as, Cannes’ Marché du Film, and the European Film Market in Berlin. The project’s insights have been shared globally, from Brussels to Rio, influencing discussions at major film markets and industry think tanks, such as the EFADs Think Tank and the EFARN.

Since its inception in 2013, the Göteborg Film Festival’s Nostradamus initiative has analyzed the swift changes in the audiovisual sector to help professionals and policymakers look ahead. The annual Nostradamus report, lectures, and seminars have influenced strategy and fostered sustainable development. Our work has always relied on the collective wisdom of not just the interviewed experts, but the many professionals who shave shared insight and intelligence with us both formally and informally.
Our new endeavour, the Nostradamus Collective, is the natural next step. We will explore how to create a year-round community to create and share world-class industry analysis and critical insight together. The Nostradamus Collective aims to foster knowledge-sharing and inspire deeper engagement in how the choices of individuals can shape the industry longterm. We imagine the platform or network as a hub for industry exchange and a catalyst for cross-sectoral development.
In 2024, we teamed up with BoostHBG, which is bringing its innovation and community-development expertise to the table. Based in southern Sweden, BoostHBG is dedicated to nurturing creative talent and building professional networks in the audiovisual sector.
The Nostradamus Collective will start as a prototype, testing and iterating on methodology and execution. First-year objectives include gathering a seed community of participating professionals, selecting a digital platform to facilitate the work, and exploring sustainable partnerships to help f inance project activities. A prototype meetup is planned for autumn 2024 to refine the project’s structure and activities, leading up to a launch event at the Göteborg Film Festival in 2025, where the Nostradamus Collective will be officially introduced.
