The Sven Nykvist CinematographyAward Returns — Celebrating the Art of Light and Story
The Sven Nykvist Cinematography Award celebrates the artistry at the heart of filmmaking — the power of light, shadow, and image to tell stories that move us. Established in memory of one of cinema's most influential visual storytellers, the award continues to evolve under the Göteborg Film Festival.
After being presented for many years in the spirit of Sven Nykvist, the award paused in 2024 when the Sven Nykvist Cinematography Fund was dissolved. Now, the award is reborn — relaunched in partnership with the Nykvist family and Fujifilm, who join as the new Presenting Partner. The award recognizes cinematographers whose work shapes the soul, tone, and visual language of film.
“We're proud to continue presenting this important award and to celebrate the art of filmmaking in Sven Nykvist's spirit,” says Pia Lundberg, Artistic Director of Göteborg Film Festival.
The winner will be selected by the same international jury that presents the Dragon Award Best Nordic Film, which includes at least one cinematographer alongside other distinguished filmmakers.
“When Sven received an award, he said: ‘I hope this paves the way for even better work.’ That’s who he was — an artist and a man of integrity, sculpting emotion and depth through light and shadow. His legacy still shines brightly today, reminding us that light doesn’t need to be complex to move us — only honest,” says Marilde Nykvist, Sven Nykvist's granddaughter.
Looking ahead to Göteborg Film Festival 2026, the new partnership with Fujifilm marks an exciting new chapter. With its long tradition and deep passion for image creation, Fujifilm offers the award a platform from which to grow and reach new audiences.
“With our long photographic heritage and passion for visual storytelling, we’re thrilled to honor the Nordic region's most outstanding cinematographers and showcase their artistry and craft,” says Karl Löweberg, Marketing Director, Fujifilm Nordic.
The Sven Nykvist Cinematography Award includes a SEK 50,000 cash prize and will be presented during the Dragon Awards ceremony on the festival’s closing night.
