Göteborg Film Festival starts when Gothenburg and the Nordic countries are at their darkest and coldest. Then the cinema is the perfect place for the audience to be met by movie magic. But film is not only for experiencing indoors and in winter. Göteborg Film Festival Open Air wants to create the summer’s most beautiful film experience every year when the citizens of Gothenburg are treated to epic films under the open sky.

In August 2019, 7,500 Gothenburgers sat down with a picnic basket in front of Palmhuset in Trädgårdsföreningen to enjoy both A Star Is Born and The Favorite. Under the current circumstances of 2020, there was no opportunity to gather in the same way. Göteborg Film Festival therefore presented Open Air Anywhere with the ambition of becoming the most visited outdoor screening ever. The event meant that everyone was given free access to the Norwegian drama Disco via computer, tablet, mobile, Chromecast, Android TV or Apple TV. In the summer of 2021, we could all gather at Götaplatsen for a fantastic film experience of the festival favorite Another Round. In addition, we took our outdoor cinema on tour around Western Sweden to create even more magical evenings with films under the stars. Together with Film i Väst and Gothenburg Culture Festival, in the summer of 2022 we showed the critically acclaimed drama comedy The Worst Person in the World in Slottskogen, Lerum, Trollhättan and Biskopsgården.

The vision of Open Air is to be inclusive and welcoming, serving as an introduction to cultural experiences for new visitors as well as an unforgettable film event for die-hard cineastes.
