Alicia Vikander Filmlabb
To inspire young people towards a future in the film industry, Alicia Vikander and Göteborg Film Festival have launched the joint project Alicia Vikander Filmlabb. The aim of the project is to provide young people with the tools to express themselves through film, spark dreams and future aspirations, and contribute to increasing diversity in the film industry.
How does it work?
Each year, 3-4 schools from different parts of Gothenburg are selected, and over twelve sessions throughout the year, students get to watch, create, and discuss film. A whole class of 7th or 8th graders from each school participates in the project. Each class then presents their final film during the Göteborg Film Festival.
Alicia Vikander, the initiator
Alicia Vikander is the initiator of the Alicia Vikander Filmlabb and was also the recipient of the honorary award at Göteborg Film Festival 2020. In the fall of 2021, Vikander also received the Sten A Olsson Foundation for Research and Culture’s Honorary Scholarship of the Year. At the award ceremony at Göteborg Concert Hall, Vikander announced that the entire scholarship amount would be donated to the creation of the Alicia Vikander Filmlabb project. In addition to the donation, she made a personal contribution to the project, which is carried out with further support from the Sten A Olsson Foundation.
“I feel incredibly grateful and honored to receive the Sten A Olsson Foundation’s scholarship. To have the chance to start this film lab together with Göteborg Film Festival, to inspire young people and create opportunities for them to explore the world of film, is something I am incredibly excited about,” says Alicia Vikander.
Alicia Vikander Film Lab continues with support from the MOE Foundation
From 2025 onward, the project is being carried out with support from the Madeleine Olsson Eriksson Foundation. This year's participating schools are Lövgärdesskolan, Sannaskolan, and Guldhedsskolan. The students took part in a kick-off gala during Göteborg Film Festival at Stora Teatern, where they got to see, among other things, last year's lab students' final films. During the spring, they took part in four different modules, from getting to know the camera and the medium of film to working with dramaturgy and genres. Just before summer break, they were invited to a celebrated screening of the Gyllene Tider film Sommartider at the classic cinema Capitol. Work on the students' own final films begins in the fall. Each class makes a joint short film, which then premieres at a real cinema during the closing gala at Göteborg Film Festival 2026.
Göteborg Film Festival's film educators in schools
The film education work is led by Göteborg Film Festival's experienced film educators, with backgrounds as arts school teachers, film studies at Valand, and many years of experience working with children and young people. The pedagogy is based on letting students first create, and then analyze and reflect on what they've made together with their classmates. The method works well for most students, but has proven especially successful for students with special needs.

Funding
It is free for schools to participate in the Film Lab. Schools must be located in Gothenburg, with a spread across the city.
