With its functionalist design from the heyday of sound-era cinema, Roy remains one of the most elegant, modern and well-preserved cinemas of its time.

Originally opened as Biografen Royal on April 20, 1940, the historic venue near Götaplatsen was re-inaugurated in 2008 under the shortened name Roy. Due to naming rights, the cinema could no longer be called Royal and was renamed in tribute to Gothenburg-born filmmaker Roy Andersson—by simply dimming the last two letters on the original sign.

Today, Bio Roy, operated by Folkets Hus och Parker, offers daily film screenings alongside live and recorded opera, ballet, theatre, concerts and visual art. In the foyer, an on-site café serves organic and fair-trade options.
