This year, Göteborg Film Festival presented a gender equal programme, as the first major international film festival. Half of the films were directed by men, half were directed by women.
The decision was inspired by the 5050×2020 movement, that pointed out 2020 as the year of gender parity. We wanted to kick off 2020 by demonstrating that it is possible to make a gender equal programme. We want this to be an inspiration for other festivals, distributors and programmers.
The director is of course only one of the important roles in a film production. But, when half of the films in the festival programme are directed by women, we have found that it has effect on other roles in the productions. Women tends to work more with women, and men tends to work more with men.
We presented 360 films in the festival programme. The image above shows the representation of male and female directors. Films with both male and female directors, and films with a director that doesn’t identify as either man or woman, are presented seperately.
Regarding the films directed by women, 48% of the producers were women, 24% were men and 29% were mixed. Regarding the films directed by men, 19% of the producers were women, 48% were men and 33% were mixed.
