It’s not easy to say whether you should laugh or cry about the fact that in 2010, Kathryn Bigelow became the first female director to ever win an Oscar for Best Director, which was awarded for The Hurt Locker. But better late than never.

And it was first with The Hurt Locker that Bigelow truly became one of the major players in Hollywood. She had previously directed eighties classics like her debut Black Leather with a young Willem Dafoe as well as the hard-boiled Blue Steel (1989).

She visited the festival in 1996 with the now-iconic sci-fi film Strange Days.
