Inspired by real life events, Madame Luna tells the story of an Eritrean refugee washed ashore in Libya who survives to become a notorious people smuggler, with deep ties to Italian organized crime. When the regime in Libya falls, Madame Luna has to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean, a refugee once more. Once in Italy, she rises quickly through the ranks of the illegal network that exploits immigrants and must choose between a prosperous life in the Mafia or saving the young Eritrean girl Eli, who reminds Luna of her younger self and forces her to confront her past.
