The French auteur Claire Denis is in a league of her own. A master of imagery, where silence often plays a larger part than spoken words.
She grew up in colonial West Africa, something which is clearly reflected in her films, which often raise the issues of racism, confusion of languages and colonialism.
We remember her enthralling debut Chocolat (1989), Beau Travail (1999) and not least White Material (2009) with which she visited the festival.
We now look with excitement towards her upcoming sci-fi film High Life.
