Anna Äärelä (b. 1992) is a writer-director from Finland. She has graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Aalto University, where she directed 16 short films, most of which she wrote herself. Having started out as a photographer, her style is highly visual. Her themes often revolve around dark subject matters. Äärelä’s short film Mad from the Sun won the Next Generation Award at Haugesund Film Festival in 2021. In 2019, she attended the straight8shootout -competition in Cannes and won the Gold prize for her short Teenage Girl Killed. Äärelä is currently working on her first feature film and miniseries.
