What new possibilities and threats will be unlocked with AI-powered technologies integrating into audiovisual industry workflows? How can the industry take action to transform itself to appeal to Gen Z, ensuring a diverse talent pipeline for creativity as well as capacity? How can the filmmaking business adapt to the changing landscape, embracing various formats, business models, and distribution paths?

“With production technologies changing and democratizing, filmmaking is about to become incredibly exciting again. At the same time film and TV production volumes will contract for a few years, so it’s especially important not to make short-sighted choices. To remain relevant and attractive for audiences and talent, we can’t afford to now sacrifice workforce diversity, a healthy work environment, or investment in content for younger audiences.“

For the next 3-5 years, the 2023 Nostradamus report predicts a pronounced restructuring phase for the traditional film and television industries. AI-powered technologies are set to bring dramatic efficiency gains and creative possibilities, but also major challenges, such as heavily restructuring jobs and workflows in all parts of the industry. With the impact of transformed global economies, conflicts, and climate crises, the industry’s future context will be far from business as usual.

The report also delves into the evolving nature of TV as a streaming platform and examines the industry’s challenges in remaining attractive to young audiences. It concludes that the film & TV industry must focus on audience relevance; that it will develop and distribute its content in a way that is IP-centric and platform-harmonic; and that it urgently needs to address its issues with social and environmental sustainability.
